Leeds KAIST International Leadership Programme 2023

The Leeds KAIST International Leadership Programme took place from the 12th to the 19th July 2023 in South Korea.

The programme reflects the ambition of the University’s international strategy and values, with 15 students from the University of Leeds collaborating with 15 students from KAIST University.

The programme, developed in partnership with Common Purpose (a not-for-profit organization), aimed to tackle the biggest issues facing businesses, governments and societies worldwide, shining a spotlight on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Set against the backdrop of Daejeon, South Korea, the students embarked on a journey to answer the compelling question: “How can we ensure our cities are inclusive and resilient through advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals?”

The group began with an introduction on the Challenge from a Daejeon perspective meeting with the Deputy Mayor at Daejeon City Hall, where they had the opportunity to learn about the city’s efforts towards advancing the SDGs. The students engaged in fruitful discussions with the Deputy Mayor, gaining a comprehensive understanding of how Daejeon addresses social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and urban resilience.

The programme continued with immersion visits to organisations who are addressing the challenge in Daejeon:

  • Narma Inc., an influential technology firm based in Daejeon. Narma Inc. demonstrated its commitment to the SDGs through its product design process, emphasising sustainability and inclusion.

  • The Daejeon Support Centre for Foreign Residents learning about the various services provided to foreigners living in Daejeon, including language education, cultural activities, legal advice, and more.
  • The Institute for Basic Science. Engaging in discussions with scientists about their research projects that directly or indirectly contribute to the advancement of SDGs. The visit provided an insightful look into how fundamental research can drive sustainable and inclusive development.

Travelling to Seoul, students embarked on immersions in a new context visiting the LG Corporation, which provided an opportunity to understand the role of multinational corporations in advancing the SDGs. The group learned about LG’s various sustainability initiatives and how the corporation is leveraging its technological prowess to contribute to creating resilient and inclusive cities.

Students attended the Alumni Networking Event held at the International Finance Centre, hearing from Alumni about their contributions to the community, how they support current students, and how important it is to build a strong network of Leeds alumni around the world. The launch of a new pilot programme for Global Alumni Ambassadors was an exciting announcement for all involved.

The final stages of the programme, process of innovation and responses to the challenge saw the students compiling and pitching their responses to a panel of city and university leaders. Pitches included integration of foreign residents, self-development within the Korean curriculum, a social enterprise to tackle the loneliness epidemic, a transport incentive programme, and developing student wellbeing.

Completion of the programme has helped the students to develop critical employability skills, get unrivalled access to employers, further their ability to work across cultures, advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals and make long lasting friendships.

Quote from Natalie Sem, International Business and Marketing (Industrial):

“The International Leadership Programme was a truly transformative experience. From engaging activities led by Common Purpose to stepping out of my comfort zone, each day brought invaluable learnings and personal growth.

I gained essential leadership skills like vulnerability, trust-building, empathy, and active listening – all crucial qualities for effective leadership. Learning these skills whilst in South Korea enriched my cultural intelligence. Exploring the scenic cities of Daejeon and Seoul deepened my understanding of cross-cultural awareness. Moreover, networking with diverse individuals further expanded my horizons and opened doors to potential collaborations.

This programme was a perfect blend of leadership development and cultural exploration, leaving a lasting impact on my personal and professional journey. I am immensely grateful for this opportunity and highly recommend it to aspiring leaders seeking to make an impact in the world.”
