When studying abroad I think the best thing to do is to try something new that you can’t do back at home. That’s why I joined the 日本舞踊 club and began learning traditional Japanese dance from the Edo Period (
1603-1868). When watching the dance it seems very elegant and graceful and yet I realized straight away when I started learning it is actually very difficult and I didn’t look elegant or graceful! So I was quite surprised to be asked just shortly after joining if I would like to dance in the school festival! Of course I said yes and whilst I was pretty nervous (I was worried I would drop the fan when spinning it!) it has been one of my best experiences so far. In particular I loved being able to wear the Kimono (Japanese traditional dress). I found out it is really complicated to put on (we had to have helpers!) and really hot to wear as there are so many layers. However, with my Kimono on and hair and makeup done, I felt as if I had stepped back in time. It was a uniquely Japanese experience.
Joining a club is a great way to meet new friends and learn something new. The two teachers are incredibly kind and although they don’t speak English, I am able to learn the dances through copying. Everyone in the club is friendly and interested to hear why I started learning Japanese. Another great thing about joining a club is you can practice speaking your target language and have fun. I would definitely recommend anyone studying abroad to get involved in a club. I am already looking forward to our next performance!

Ohh, you joined Nichibu too! All three of us Leeds guys at ICU last year joined. I do agree you should choose a club that gives you something new and let’s experience the country you’re studying in. I very much enjoyed being able to wear formal menswear, and learning about kimono from people who really know their stuff. I hope Waka sensei is well!
